BR-SmartMedia Hardware Configuration
There are only a hand full of switches which can be used to configure
the BR-SmartMedia. Once these are set, you will probably never need to
adjust them again. Most of the configuration is done through the Software
Configuration, which is described in the following section.
1) Address: These two rotary switches on the front of the BR-
SmartMedia are used to set the address for the RS-422 serial port.
Normally, only one BR-SmartMedia card is set to use any one ad-
dress. If more than one card is set to the same address, then the
serial ports can not be attached to the same RS-422 multidrop
network at the same time.
The RS-422 serial address for the BR-SmartMedia is set using
Hexadecimal numbers on these switches. The first digit of the
Hexadecimal address is set on the upper of the two switches. The
second digit of the hexadecimal address is set on the lower of the
two switches. If you are not sure how these translate from decimal
numbers, a chart at the end of every Gilderfluke & Company
manual will show you the equivalent numbers.
2) Write Protect Switch: When this switch is ‘Write Protect’ position,
the BR-SmartMedia will protect the onboard configuration EEprom
from accidental alterations. With the switch in the ‘Write OK’ posi-
tion, reads and writes can take place normally. With the memory
write protected, the BR-SmartMedia should retain whatever has
been configured into it for at least forty years.
3) 'Smart' Brick/'Dumb' Brick Select: (Serial modes Only) This switch
tells the BR-SmartMedia whether the BR-SmartMedia is going to be
acting like a ‘Dumb’ Brick or a ‘'Smart' Brick’. When acting as a
‘Dumb’ Brick, the BR-SmartMedia will be triggered to play shows by
the four optically isolated ‘J8’ trigger inputs. When acting as a
‘Smart’ Brick, The BR-SmartMedia will lock to and follow time code
information send to it through the 'Smart' Brick Network from the
'Smart' Brick Brian.
A single card cage should not have both ‘Smart’ and ‘Dumb’
Bricks installed in it. Damage may result if there are.
This switch actually switches the six wires that connect to the
backplane of the BR-SmartMedia between the optoisolators used
for 'Dumb' Bricks and the RS-422 receivers used for 'Smart' Bricks.
If you plug in a BR-SmartMedia which has been configured to act
as a 'Smart' Brick into a slot that has been configured for a 'Dumb'
Brick, you risk damaging the RS-422 receivers.
